A TOURNAMENT FOR EVERYONE

The vision behind the DC Open

The Mubadala Citi DC Open's rich history is deeply rooted in a vision for equality and accessibility. In 1968, the year the last Civil Rights Act was passed, American sports icon Arthur Ashe had a dream. After becoming the first African-American male to win a major tennis championship at the U.S. Open, Ashe envisioned a tournament in Washington, D.C., that would be open to everyone.

Driving through D.C. with his friend and US Davis Cup captain Donald Dell, Ashe insisted on one condition for his participation: "It has to be in an integrated area so black faces come out and watch the tennis. If you do it at a public park, a public facility, and not a country club, I’ll play the event."

A year later, the Washington Open was born in Rock Creek Park, and Ashe kept his promise, playing the tournament eleven times and winning it all in 1973. This commitment to inclusivity, along with Ashe and Dell's co-founding of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), makes the Washington Open unofficially considered the first ATP tournament.
